National Foundation Day (Gaecheonjeol) - October 3rd
National Foundation Day, known as Gaecheonjeol (개천절) in Korean, is a national holiday in South Korea celebrated annually on October 3rd. It commemorates the legendary founding of the first Korean kingdom, Gojoseon, by the mythical figure Dangun Wanggeom in 2333 BC. This day is a celebration of Korean identity and history.
The Legend of Dangun:
According to Korean mythology, Hwanung, the son of the Heavenly Emperor Hwanin, descended to Earth and established a city. A bear and a tiger wished to become human, and Hwanung gave them a test. The bear persevered and transformed into a woman, Ungnyeo, who later married Hwanung and gave birth to Dangun Wanggeom. Dangun is said to have founded Gojoseon, the first Korean kingdom, on the 3rd day of the 10th lunar month, which is now celebrated on October 3rd of the Gregorian calendar.
