Saint Nicholas Day - December 6th

Saint Nicholas Day is a Christian festival celebrated on December 6th in many countries around the world. It commemorates Saint Nicholas of Myra, a 4th-century Greek bishop known for his generosity and kindness, particularly towards children. This day is often seen as a precursor to Christmas, with its own unique traditions.

Who Was Saint Nicholas?

Saint Nicholas was the Bishop of Myra (now Demre, part of modern-day Turkey). He lived in the 4th century and became famous for his acts of charity and the miracles attributed to him. One of the most well-known stories tells of him providing dowry money for three poor daughters so they would not have to be sold into servitude. He is the patron saint of children, sailors, merchants, pawnbrokers, unmarried women, students, and many other groups.

Global Traditions of Saint Nicholas Day

Saint Nicholas Day is celebrated in various ways across different countries:

  • Germany and Austria: On the evening of December 5th, children place their shoes or boots outside the door, hoping that St. Nicholas will fill them with small gifts, candies, and nuts. Often, St. Nicholas (Nikolaus) is accompanied by Knecht Ruprecht, who may leave a rod for naughty children.
  • Netherlands and Belgium: Sinterklaas (the Dutch name for Saint Nicholas) arrives by boat from Spain in mid-November and is celebrated on the evening of December 5th. Children leave their shoes out with carrots for Sinterklaas's horse, and in return, receive gifts and treats. Sinterklaas is accompanied by his helpers, known as Zwarte Pieten (Black Peters).
  • Switzerland: Samichlaus (the Swiss-German name for Saint Nicholas) visits children, often with his helper Schmutzli, bringing them nuts, chocolates, and small toys.
  • France: In the eastern and northern regions, Saint Nicolas is celebrated with parades and the distribution of gifts and treats to children.
  • Eastern Europe: In countries like Poland, Hungary, and the Czech Republic, Mikuláš (the local name for Saint Nicholas) visits children on the evening of December 5th or the morning of December 6th, bringing gifts and sometimes accompanied by an angel and a devil.

The Connection to Santa Claus

The modern figure of Santa Claus is largely derived from the traditions surrounding Saint Nicholas. The Dutch Sinterklaas tradition, brought to America by Dutch settlers, evolved over time into the Santa Claus we know today. The image of a jolly man who brings gifts to children is rooted in the historical figure of Saint Nicholas and his acts of kindness.
