Malta Freedom Day Countdown 2025
Malta Freedom Day - March 31st
Freedom Day (Maltese: Jum il-Ħelsien) is a national holiday celebrated in Malta every year on 31 March. It marks the anniversary of the withdrawal of British troops and the closure of the last British military base in Malta on 31 March 1979. This event signified the end of Malta's military dependence on the United Kingdom.
The End of Military Presence
Malta had been a strategic military base for the British for centuries, playing a crucial role in various conflicts, including World War II. After Malta gained independence in 1964, the presence of British forces continued under a series of agreements. However, in the late 1970s, the Maltese government decided not to renew the lease agreement for the British naval facilities, leading to the final withdrawal on March 31, 1979.
National Commemorations
Freedom Day is a significant public holiday in Malta, celebrated with various events across the islands. The main commemoration usually takes place at the Freedom Day Monument in Vittoriosa. A traditional regatta featuring boat races in the Grand Harbour is a highlight of the celebrations, attracting large crowds. Cultural performances and exhibitions are also organized to mark this important day in Malta's history.
