Origins of International Women's Day
The first National Woman's Day was observed in the United States on February 28, 1909. In 1910, at the International Socialist Women's Conference in Copenhagen, Clara Zetkin proposed an international women's day. The first International Women's Day was celebrated on March 19, 1911, in Austria, Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland. In 1913, it was decided to transfer IWD to March 8th, and this date has been observed ever since. The United Nations officially recognized International Women's Day in 1975.
