International Holocaust Remembrance Day Countdown 2025
International Holocaust Remembrance Day - January 27th
International Holocaust Remembrance Day is an international memorial day held every year on January 27th. The date marks the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau by the Soviet Red Army in 1945. It was designated by the United Nations General Assembly resolution 60/7 on November 1, 2005, during a special session held to mark the sixtieth anniversary of the end of World War II.
Remembering the Victims
The Holocaust was a genocide during World War II in which Nazi Germany, aided by its collaborators, systematically murdered some six million European Jews—around two-thirds of the Jewish population of Europe— between 1941 and 1945. Jews were targeted for extermination as part of a larger event involving the persecution and murder of other groups by the regime, including Romani people, ethnic Poles, and others.
Global Observances
On this day, many countries hold ceremonies and activities to commemorate the victims of the Holocaust and to promote education about the Holocaust to prevent future genocides. These may include memorial services, candlelight vigils, and educational programs.
