Europe Day - May 9th Countdown 2025
Europe Day - May 9th
Europe Day is an annual celebration of peace and unity in Europe. It is celebrated on May 9th by the European Union (EU) and also in other European countries. The date marks the anniversary of the Schuman Declaration, proposed by French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman on May 9, 1950.
The Significance of the Schuman Declaration
The Schuman Declaration proposed the creation of a European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC), whose members would pool coal and steel production. Coal and steel were vital resources for the war industry, and by placing their production under a common high authority, Schuman aimed to make war between historic rivals France and Germany materially impossible.
The ECSC was eventually established in 1951 and is considered the foundation of what is now the European Union. The Schuman Declaration is therefore seen as the starting point of European integration.
