Africa Day - May 25th Countdown 2025
Africa Day - May 25th
Africa Day is celebrated annually on May 25th to commemorate the founding of the Organization of African Unity (OAU) on this day in 1963. The OAU was established in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, by 32 independent African states. It aimed to promote unity and solidarity among African states, to coordinate and intensify their cooperation for development, to defend their sovereignty, their territorial integrity and independence, and to eradicate all forms of colonialism from Africa.
The Organization of African Unity (OAU)
The formation of the OAU was a landmark moment in the history of the African continent, representing a collective determination by African leaders to forge a common destiny and to address the challenges facing the newly independent nations. The OAU played a significant role in supporting liberation movements across the continent and in fostering cooperation on various issues, including economic development, health, and education.
In 2002, the OAU was replaced by the African Union (AU), which has a broader mandate and aims to achieve greater integration and development in Africa. Africa Day continues to be observed on May 25th as a celebration of African unity, diversity, and progress.
